I guess that the first few months are really an observation period...and this week has been a prime example...to take a few notable cases...which I shall try and recount as anecdoctally (is that a word?) as I can without upsetting my Japanese friends for whom the following activities are the norm and taken with all due seriousness. First of all, at which school in Australia could you posibly hope to find the principal whippersnippering the front lawn of the school with one of the office ladies in tow sweeping up the grass? Next, a visit to the school office in search of envelopes, confirmed the strange sound that I had been wondering about for the past fifteen minutes but thought that I must be mistaken, but no! Indeed in the office the office ladies were using a sewing machine to hem new white squares of material destined to be used on the front of each students' sports shirts with their year and name marked on them. Thirdly, homeroom time or class meeting at the end of the day is a practice unfamiliar to Australian high schools, where you are lucky to get students together for roll call, let alone get them to stay after last period to reflect on the day's activities, what was learned and how the class behaved towards fellow students and teachers, and to prepare for the next day...but that is not all, singing practice capped off the agenda to the meeting, will all students neatly forming a circle according to their voice, with one student at the front conducting under the watchful eye of a teacher, the latter who would stop the group from time to time to correct the way in which a certain phrase should be sung. Lastly for now, on Thursday afternoon it was raining and I had stayed back to help some students prepare for an English recitation competition to be held next week. As normal outside sports were not possible due to the weather...and for some reason the gym was not being used...a group of students were running circuits through the school corridors...so as I was trying to teach correct English pronunciation, we had to stop every few minutes as a stampede of runners came past the classroom where we we practising!

What an amazing education environment. I cannot imagine anyone in my old high school having the ability to sit and talk about how the day went... most likely because they'd have been to out of it to remember!.
yep pretty crazy, i guess it's all a ingrained from such a young age...
